Frequently asked questions: Bodywork

Have a question? Check here first. Don't hesitate to contact us with anything else!

which type of bodywork is best for me?

See the descriptions on the Bodywork page and see what aligns best with your needs. Note that most sessions are a combination of techniques from multiple styles of bodywork, so if more than one type sounds lovely, that’s great! If you have questions about what would be best for you, please feel free to reach out.

what should I wear?

For a shiatsu- or reiki-only session, wear comfortable clothing that you can move around in. Both are practiced over clothing, so comfort is key. Layers can also be helpful, as your body temperature naturally drops when you are at rest. For any other session, it is still nice to have comfortable clothing that is easy to change out of so that you can start and end your session with ease.

how often should I get massage?

This is a question that does not have a one-size-fits-all answer (sorry!). Most often, I recommend getting bodywork monthly. Depending on how active you are and how you use your body, it might be best to get bodywork weekly, sometimes monthly, and sometimes as frequently as multiple times a week! When you are managing an acute issue and are looking to recover from injury or repattern a movement, I suggest coming in twice per week for a couple of weeks, and then tapering off to once per week for a month or so, and then every/other week and then monthly.

how do I prepare for my session?

Arrive hydrated for your session. That means drink water for a few hours before your session, rather than just chugging some beforehand (because then you’ll have to run to the restroom in the middle, which is always okay, and it’s nicer to stay relaxed on the table :)) If you work out before your session, you might feel a little more sore when receiving massage. Some people like that, and others do not, so plan accordingly. Additionally, if you have long hair and don’t want it to get oily it is always helpful to have a way to put it up comfortably.

what should I do for aftercare?

Stay hydrated! Massage can release toxins (that have been built up in your tissue over time) into your bloodstream, which can make you feel less-than-wonderful. The more water you drink, the more you will be able to flush those toxins out, and keep yourself feeling lovely. Additionally, keep yourself mobile after your massage–stretch, do yoga, move around. Your newfound mobility will only stick around if you keep using it! Finally, if you can, take a hot bath with epsom salts to help your body recover and keep you feeling mobile and fresh.

what type of payment do you accept?

Cash, card, and venmo.

can I buy a gift card?

At this point in time, I do not have the ability to sell gift cards. If you would like to gift a session to someone, please contact me and we can work out all the details so that it all goes smoothly.

what about tipping?

Tipping is always appreciated. It is standard to tip 20-30% of your session value, depending on how happy you are with the work you received.
