AETHER WELLNESS

my story
My first yoga experience was in middle school--P90X. I hated it. I swore I would never do it again. In hindsight, I felt that way because it challenged me in ways I had never known to be possible. Now, that is one of the things I love most about it. I began practicing yoga consistently in college, after a serious brain injury limited my ability to exercise “normally” for several months. I had always considered myself to be an athlete, and I had never before thought of yoga as an athletic endeavor. The first classes that I took I didn’t take very seriously, and I remember asking about becoming a teacher only a few classes into my practice. Honestly, it is my Ego that led me to teaching. I wanted to “master” the sport, as I had excelled in many other physical endeavors throughout my life. I made a New Years Resolution to do teacher training, and as the Fall of that year approached, I found myself enrolling in my first program. Many programs would not have accepted me then, given the limited and inconsistent practice I had. I was oblivious to this fact, and happy to be starting my journey at Corepower Yoga.

The training was eight weeks--that was all. In that brief time, I absorbed as much as I could about postures, cueing, philosophy, and anatomy. I have never been one to connect with any specific religion, and something about that experience felt remarkably similar to what others describe as a religious experience--I felt like I had found myself. I was empowered to live authentically and I found a community that supported that lifestyle. It was unreal.

Since my first training, I have added more styles and learned more techniques. I have practiced more, though admittedly not as often as I would like. I have gotten more playful, overcome a lot of insecurities, and found my voice.

As my interest in movement and wellness grows, I continue to seek new ways to develop my skills and grow both personally and professionally. I attended Main Street Vegan Academy in New York City and became a certified Vegan Lifestyle Coach and Educator. I completed a bodywork training program at Centerpoint Massage and Shiatsu School and Clinic in Minnesota. Now I am digging further into the roots of yoga (which were stripped from my original trainings) and finding more ways to honor--and question-- the systems and histories that have brought me to where I am today.

As I look forwards I can see countless directions to head. My path is unclear, and my ability to listen to my gut has significantly improved. I have no idea what will be next, and I am excited for it.
